Highly trained College Persistence Advisors support students through every academic, personal, and financial challenge they may face as low-income, first-generation college students. The impact is powerful: SEO Scholars achieve a 90% college graduation rate and are prepared to pursue economically viable, productive careers or graduate-level education.
“'No back row in SEO' is the mantra that helped me. I realized that sitting further in the back only distracted me more. Sitting in the front of the class is the main reason why I did so well this semester!"
-Onike B., CUNY, Brooklyn College
The Program includes:
College Readiness Workshops
Scholars attend a series of workshops, before the beginning of their first year, and during college. Topics include adjustment to college life, homesickness, health issues, time management, course selection, relationship-building with professors, and effective study strategies.
Every scholar receives continual and individualized one-on-one academic, personal, and career guidance throughout their college years.
Career Exploration & Networking Events
Scholars work with their advisors to explore multiple career paths, based on personal preferences and academic aptitude. The process is ongoing, dynamic, and fully utilizes the wealth of resources from SEO’s robust network of current Scholars, alumni, and friends.
We serve 673 College Scholars, attending 177 colleges and universities, in 25 different states.
Internship Placement and Career Development
Students who participate in two summer internships during college are twice as likely to be fully employed within six months of graduation than those with no internship. Source: Mount Holyoke College, Career Outcomes Study 2013-15
Intensive Career Advising
To ensure that SEO Scholars have access to career critical internships we provide Scholars with intensive career advising. This includes ongoing resume drafting and updating, cover letter guidance, and in-person and web-based mock interviews, all aligned with internship search and placement support. In the summer of 2018, SEO College Scholars participated in internship style programs, or started full-time employment, at more than 100 companies, non-profits, government agencies, and other employers.
