  • Can I apply for more than one position?

    Absolutely. Many of our instructors hold multiple teaching positions with us during the same semester.

  • Where do SEO classes take place?

    SEO classes are currently held in the following locations*:

    New York City:

    Boot Camp: Baruch College

    Saturday & Summer Academy: Baruch College and LIU-Brooklyn

    Weekday Afterschool: the SEO Office, public schools in Lower Manhattan, and one site in Downtown Brooklyn.

    Writing & Advisory (Saturday): LIU-Brooklyn

    Writing & Advisory (Weekday): SEO Office

    San Francisco:

    Senior Boot Camp: Intersection for the Arts San Francisco

    Saturday Academy: Year Up Bay Area

    Summer Academy: The San Francisco Conservatory of Music

    Weekday Afterschool: John O’Connell Technical High School, SEO San Francisco Home Office

    Math Studio and Tutoring (Weekday): SEO San Francisco Home Office

    *Locations are subject to change. While instructors may indicate a location preference during the hiring process, we cannot guarantee placement in a preferred location.

  • What are the steps in the hiring process for instructors?

    The hiring season for fall positions runs from late July through the end of August; spring hiring runs from late October through February; and summer hiring runs from early April through mid-June. We hire instructors on a rolling basis.

    1.   Online application submission through the SEO website
    2. Phone Interview*
    3.   Qualified applicants receive an email invitation to teach a demo lesson at the SEO office
    4.   Twenty-minute demo lesson observed by SEO staff
    5.   In-person or phone interview (sometimes directly following the demo lesson)
    6.   Reference check

  • What do you look for in a demo lesson?

    We look for a student-centered approach to teaching; a rigorous and thoughtfully-planned lesson; questioning techniques that engage students’ higher order thinking skills; and a genuine interest in students’ thoughts and ideas.
